The Giver of Stars

This is the story of the WPA Packhorse Librarians of Eastern Kentucky. They operated from 1935 to 1943 and brought books to over 100,000 residents of Eastern Kentucky.
Alice moves to Kentucky from England to marry Bennett whose father owns a coal mine. Her marriage is rather strange as it remains unconsummated. Alice becomes a librarian riding a horse to deliver books to families on her route. Many children learn to read because of their efforts. Margery is not well liked because of her deceased father. She and Alice become friends. Along with several other girls they become the packhorse librarians.

This is a great story about the history of that area of the country.
